New Images
Winsford Youth and Community Forum (Previously known as Winsford Youth Forum) was established in 1981. Providing activities, facilities, services and most importantly a place for the local community to enjoy themselves.

Chatty cups
A great place to meet up for all ages.

Disco Ball
Discos and Parties under the central glitter ball. Also represents dance classes held here.

Stylised Tree
Much of Winsford was once forest, it still has many oak trees

Sir Hugh Starkey
Sixteenth century local landowner and Gentleman Usher to King Henry VIII- part of his estate is now Oulton Park. He restored St Chads in 1543 where this brass effigy of him used to rest.

Salt Mine, Swirls & Squares
Underground rock salt has shaped Winsford's landscape and economy since it was first mined in 1844. The caverns are also used for the storage of important documents in the national archive.
The square salt crystals are found throughout the mural.

Over United Reformed Church
Known locally as the strawberry gateaux, we added a slice of cake to the building designed by John Douglas the same architect responsible for Chester's Eastgate clock.

Brunner Guildhall
Along with Verdin, Brunner is the other well known local name. The guildhall was built in 1897, designed by A.E. Powles and gifted to the town by Sir John Brunner as a place for meetings and functions.

Oulton Park
A huge local attraction and venue for some New Images activities.

Main Theme
The mural is based loosely around a map design, showing Winsford's different areas as well as history. We interviewed local people and researched the town. 27 local children assisted us in painting the mural.

Devil
According to illustrated local myth, the devil plucked St Chad's church from its original position and flew off with it- only to be disturbed by the Vale Royal monks ringing their bells, he dropped St Chads to its current location (safely positioned by angels).

Animals, Arrows and Thomas Cromwell
The Royal Forest covered a large area of Winsford, hunting ground to kings, full of game animals.
Vale Royal Abbey was founded here in 1277. As the king's Chief Secretary and Chancellor of The Exchequer, it was Cromwell who ordered the dissolution and final destruction of the abbey in 1538.

Winsford Library
A prominent local facility since 1974 with connections to New Images.

Verdin building
Built in 1895 as a school by local salt industrialist and philanthropist, Joseph Verdin, designed by Manchester architects Woodhouse & Willoughby. Three winged lion finials have been brought to life.

Kayaks, Fishing & Wildlife
A popular activity at Winsford Sailing club along with fishing and bird-spotting - although The Great Crested Grebes aren't usually quite this big.

James Clarke VC
Born in Over in 1894, James Clarke went to St John's School. During WW1, aged 24, he earned the Victoria Cross for his outstanding bravery and heroic deeds.
